SPORTS THERAPY

What is Sports Therapy?

Sports therapy is a specialised field of health care that focuses on the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries related to sports and exercise. Sports therapists work with athletes and active individuals of all levels to help them achieve optimal performance and recover from injuries. Sports Therapists can work with individuals regardless of whether they play sport or not. Here are some key aspects of sports therapy in the UK:

  1. Injury Prevention: Sports therapists provide advice and develop programs to help prevent injuries through conditioning, strengthening, and flexibility exercises.
  2. Assessment and Diagnosis: They are trained to assess and diagnose sports-related injuries using various techniques, including physical examinations and movement assessments.
  3. Treatment: Treatment methods can include manual therapy, massage, taping, and electrotherapy to alleviate pain and promote healing.
  4. Rehabilitation: Sports therapists design and implement rehabilitation programs to ensure safe and effective recovery, helping individuals regain strength, flexibility, and function.
  5. Performance Enhancement: They offer advice and training programs to enhance athletic performance, focusing on improving technique, strength, and endurance.
  6. Education and Advice: Sports therapists educate individuals on injury prevention, proper training techniques, and overall health and wellness.

Techniques & Treatments

Sports Therapy uses a plethora of techniques including;

  • Sports Massage
  • Joint Mobilisations
  • Exercise Prescription
  • Rehabilitation Programmes
  • Kinesio Taping
  • Cupping

Dependent on injury severity, a course of treatment may only consist of several appointments for milder cases or require more than this for more severe cases. Some patients opt to attend on a maintenance basis for long standing issues to avoid re-injury and further episodes.

Do I need to play Sport to have Sports Therapy?

Absolutely not. Sports Therapy is a field of health care that focuses on addressing injuries related to sports, exercise or activity. Whilst Sports Therapists will work with patients of all sporting levels, they also work with members of the general public who may have just injured themselves through a day-to-day activity such as gardening or lifting the shopping into the boot. It is a therapy that uses a combination of hands-on massage and mobilisation techniques as well as exercise prescription to help you on the road to recovery and suits a wide array of individuals not just sporting ones.

Qualifications

In the UK, sports therapists often hold degrees in sports therapy or related fields and may be members of professional bodies such as The Society of Sports Therapists (SST). They work in various settings, including sports clubs, clinics, and private practice, and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care.

Both of our Sports Therapists, Jade & Kai completed their 3-year Sports Therapy degrees at Teesside University in 2024. They both have weekly mentoring sessions with Hale House clinic directors and Osteopaths Joanna Waterworth & Ross Gemmell to review cases, techniques and the latest evidence to uphold the highest standards of treatment.
